Examing Codes of Ethics

NAEYC
Appreciate and support the bond between the child and family
Recognize that children are best understood and supported in the context of family, culture, community, and society.
Respect the dignity, worth, and uniqueness of each individual.
Respect diversity in children, families, and colleagues.

DEC
We shall demonstrate in our behavior and language and appreciation for the unique value and human potential of each child.
We shall demonstrate the highest standards of personal integrity, truthfulness, and honesty in all our professional activities in order to inspire the trust and confidence of the children and families and those with whom we work with.
We shall serve as advocates for children with disabilities and their families and for the professionals who serve them by supporting both policy and programmatic decisions that enhance the quality of their lives.

I chose these ethics because it is close to my heart and what i try to accomplish everyday with my children. Working with children and teaching the respect is a very hard thing when you as a professional do not respect them. You must treat all individuals with respect and do not judge them. All individuals are unique and we need to learn to respect difference and embrace the uniqueness that will help us thrive as a country. Our children are our future lets give them a great start.

  1. Great post! I agree with what you stated about treating children with respect. I see this far too much that teachers forget to show respect to children. Children need to be respected for the unique individuals that they are. It is so hard for me when working with other teachers when I see them treat children with no respect for who they are. I think we need to embrace children for all their qualities and traits whether we agree or disagree with them.

  2. Hello Charisssa,
In North America today, families come from many different backgrounds, and reflect on a variety of cultures, languages, life experiences and lifestyles. Children are likely to live and learn with people who may be very different from them. It is especially important to respect diversity in children, families and colleagues. Great post, thanks for sharing!

  3. Hi Charissa,

I really enjoyed your post this week. You clearly have a passion for respecting children and their families. Like Lia said, I also too often see teachers who treat all children the same, and do not form a genuine relationship with the children in their care. They seem to think there is a blanket way of doing things that applies to all children, regardless of their background. How do you think that we can work toward changing this thinking in our colleagues?

  4. Good post. I like that you said the ethics were important to you. This means that you really have a passion for what you are doing. I love to meet people that share the same passion as me. Children watch our every move. I remember walking around in my class from center to center and walking up to the children playing teacher and one of them was me. She said al the things I said and acted just like me. We must show respect to all families and coworkers because best believe we are being watched.

  5. Hi Charissa,
Enjoyed your post. Respect of diversity amongst children, families, and colleagues are at time over looked but greatly needed. To respect each others differences is the goal in the field. Another great thing about this field is the wide diversity of people from different background working together, learning for one another.

  6. Respect is something we all should have instilled in us. If you cannot give respect, you can't expect the students to give the same. Children are very unique in their own way and respecting that helps getting to know your students more. Great post!
