Child Development and Public Health

The topic that I chose was access to healthy water. Many people around the world do not have access to good drinking water. According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention in 2010 801,000 children died from diarrheal.  Worldwide the water is declining and is threatening humanity world wide. As I was reading these facts I keep thinking I am so glad I live where I do. I am glad my children do not have to worry about drinking unhealthy water. We live in the mountains and our water comes from ground water. My entire community has wells that we get our water from. We have had somethings come up that have threatened our water but as a community we have fought to keep these out. We have had strip mining threaten our water but has never been able to get off the ground. We depend on the snow and water for drinking water and water use in general. We have had a lot of rain this year and it has helped the farming community and the fire danger in our area.

As I keep reading and understanding that in many third world countries children have to gather water for their families. I was also thinking I am grateful my children can go to school and play and not have to worry about providing water for the family. I was really surprise at the facts from the CDC of the amount of children that are affected by unhealthy drinking water. Water, sanitation and hygiene can help prevent 9.1% of global disease. After reading this I was thinking that why has America been so successful? What are the reasons we are not a third world country? My daughter studied the pilgrims last year and I remember reading how many did from diseases and think we after in house plumbing was invented we do not have the vulnerability to diseases that once happened in our country. I understand our society has grown because of medical advances and technology but sanitation has helped in many ways. Very grateful but also would like all children never to have to worry about safe drinking water.

  1. Hi Charissa,
I see we or on the same page when it come to our chose for a public health concern. I was very surprised at the statistic of places around the world that does not have adequate drinking water and the number of people that die and/or get diseases from inadequate water supply. Healthy water is important for the development of healthy children. Your blog was very informative. You stated that; America has been so successful. Do you feel that America does not have any casualties from inadequate water supply?

  2. Charissa,
I understand what you mean when you say you have had things that threaten your drinking water. I lived in Toledo when the levels of microcystins were so high it made it undrinkable and unusable for several days. It took a community effort to ensure the public had access to safe water. I agree our society has grown and so has sanitation efforts. Do you think these same efforts can be made in other countries? What can be done?

  3. Hi Charissa,
Thank you for sharing your post on access to healthy water. I found your topic and information interesting. It is sad that so many children do not have access to healthy water which seems like this should not be a great feat when it apparently is. 9.1% is a very high percentage of diseases and to think it could be lowered by having access to clean water for proper hygiene, sanitation, and drinking. Thanks again for sharing.

  4. Charissa,
I actually lived in an area in the United States where the water was coming from an unclean source. I never experienced having to fill up drinking and cooking water at water stations and I am for one thankful that we do not have to go through that again. This is an interesting topic that many people take here in the US take for granted.

  5. Charissa,
Thank you for sharing. It is sad to think about all the children that do not have access to clean water. I hope one day we will be able to find a solution to this problem that is killing children and families. It is nice that we live in a place that we have water readily available to us. But I fear for the children and families that do not. Thank you for sharing.
